My Story
To say my life has been challenging would be an understatement. I am a survivor — not only of war and illness but of history, heartbreak, and personal sacrifice. And the quiet battles that shape a person’s soul.
I was born during the chaos of war-torn Vietnam. In 1975, as the country fell, my family and I fled as refugees (From the 60 Minutes Archive: Rescue – YouTube), leaving behind everything we knew. My earliest memories are of poverty and fear — first in Vietnam, where survival was never promised, and later in America, where we began again with nothing but faith and determination. I was just a child, yet I came close to death amid the violence. The memories of those moments never fade.
As I grew older, life did not become easier. While in college, I lost my father to cancer — a devastating loss that shaped the man I would become. Over time, I slowly built a life with resilience and gratitude. I’ve known struggle, but I’ve also known love, faith, and the quiet victories that come from overcoming. Every scar has a story. And every breath, a reason to keep believing.
Because of where I came from and the struggles I’ve overcome, I developed deep empathy for others facing hardship. For more than 40 years, I’ve dedicated my life to service:
- Volunteering at soup kitchens (something I still do today)
- Supporting homeless shelters and women’s shelters
- Providing baby necessities for unwed mothers
- Working with nonprofits
- Coaching kids in basketball
- Helping young adults pursue their GEDs
Serving others has never been an obligation. It has been my purpose/calling — a way to give back the grace that carried me through.
I’ve also been blessed with a family of my own. I’ve been married for nearly 20 years and have two wonderful children, now teenagers and student athletes in high school. More than anything, I want to watch them grow up. I want to continue God’s work through them. I want to be there for graduations, weddings, and — I pray — the joy of becoming a grandparent one day. I don’t want them to experience the pain of losing a father the way I lost mine.

My Story of Survival
Mine is a story of survival—not just through war, poverty, and illness but also through heartbreak, sacrifice, and the quiet, everyday battles that shape who we are.
I carry my past not as a burden, but as proof:
I’m still here. Still standing. Still fighting.
A Fight for Life
More recently, I’ve faced death again, twice.
I nearly lost my life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, I live with a serious illness that requires dialysis three times a week. At one point, I needed it daily to survive. Now, I’m on the transplant list, holding on to the hope of a second chance at life.
Why I’m Reaching Out
Today, I face a new kind of battle: my kidneys are failing, and I am in urgent need of a transplant. I never imagined that this would be the fight I’d be facing after everything. Yet here I am — once again calling on the strength that’s carried me through so much — and asking for your help.
Also, because of my condition, I can no longer work and rely on disability support. Still, I endure. I have faith, and I believe in the kindness of others.
How You Can Help
This is not easy to write, but I know the power of compassion. I believe in the goodness of people.
Whether through:- Prayer: Please pray for healing, for strength, and for the right donor to come forward in time. Even a simple prayer can lift my spirit and help carry me through the darkest days. In moments of fear or pain, your faith gives me hope. Knowing that others are standing with me in prayer means more than words can ever express.
- Thank you for believing with me.
- Considering organ donation : If you feel moved, I ask you to consider something extraordinary — Becoming a living kidney donor.
Many people live long, healthy lives with just one kidney. Your gift could save mine and allow me to remain a father, husband, and servant to my community.
Even if you are not a direct match, kidney paired donation programs may still allow your generosity to help me or someone else in need. Or simply by spreading the word.
